History of Reiki

Reiki is believed to have begun in Tibet 2500-3000 years ago and was rediscovered in the mid 1800’s by Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese Christian educator in Kyoto, Japan.

In the mid 1800’s, he was the Dean of a small Christian University in Kyoto. One day his students challenged him as to how Jesus performed hands on healing. They wanted to know why there weren’t many healers in their time performing the same acts as Christ. Dr Usui‘s students reminded him of what Christ states in the Bible, "You will do as I have done and even greater things". Usui was stunned and resigned his position, determined to find answers to this question.

His quest brought him to both western and eastern philosophies. He began an extensive twenty-one-year study of the healing phenomena of history's greatest spiritual leaders. He also studied ancient sutras (Buddhist teachings written in Sanskrit). He discovered ancient sounds and symbols that are linked directly to the human body and nervous system, which activate the universal life energy for healing.

Usui then underwent a metaphysical experience and became empowered to use these sounds and symbols to heal. He called this form of healing Reiki and taught it throughout Japan until his death around 1893.

Usui passed on Reiki to Dr. Chujiro Hayashi who became the second Grand Master in line. Dr Chujiro Hayashi ran a private Reiki in Tokyo until 1940, where unusually severe illness and disease could be treated with Reiki. This clinic was where Hawayo Takata of Hawaii first received Reiki treatments that would later lead her to study with Dr Hayashi. Takata returned to Hawaii after her studies and was made a Reiki Master by Hayashi when she visited the island in 1938. On his death in 1914, she succeeded him as Grand Master. She lived and healed in Hawaii for many years. She first began to train Reiki Masters when she was about seventy-four years of age. On December 11, 1980, Hawayo Takata passed on, leaving 22 Masters in USA and Canada. From the 22 Reiki Masters, Reiki has spread dramatically worldwide including Europe and Ireland.

My own goal as a Reiki Master is to assist each of my students to "fine tune" the vibratory level of his or her physical and etheric bodies, which in turn facilitates the development of higher consciousness. As more of use take the responsibility to raise our conscious awareness, the earth in turn will also be fine tuned to higher levels of eminence
